Tampa Bay, (PPC) Pay Per Click Help
What is Pay Per Click?
PPC is an internet advertising venue in which advertisers pay a website host if a user clicks on an ad displayed by thewebsite host. If you create a search on google, and there are 3 or more advertisers bidding on the keyword your searched; the first 3 listings, and all listings going down the right side are "paid advertisting". Google Adwords and Google Adsense is the login for advertisers and website owners. The entire opperation is tracked by Google who takes a percentage of each transaction. There are also similar systems hosted by Yahoo and other various search engines. You only have to Pay if someone clicks on your ads. PPC can be an extremely useful tool to any business if implemented and tracked appropriately. It is very easy for businesses to have negative returns with PPC if they use it incorrectly.
How does PPC work?
For any particular google search there is only space for 3 paid listing at the top and 8 to the right. This limited amount of space creates competition amongst advertisers who have good reason to pay to be there. Each market has a different competition level based on its opportunity cost to advertise. The range can be anywhere from $.10 - $12.00+ Per Click. For example: The average bid to have your ad display for the word "Buy Car" is around $8.00 Per Click, but "Sell Artwork Online" is only $.50 cents.
Even though $8 is alot for one click, if that click turns into a car sale it is still worth it for the car seller to pay out thousands a month in PPC Advertising. The art market (which I adore) is not as competitive, and bidders cannot afford to pay as much; the opportunity cost is just not there. Each market will also have sub markets in which the PPC bidding can be significantly higher or lower than its relatives. As Bidders change how much they are willing to spend for a word "the going rate" will incrase and decrease on an hourly basis. If the average bid rate is $8.00/click for "buy car" the rate will fluctuate up and down between $6/c - $10/c. Optimizing your PPC campaign is about getting your ads listed while paying $6 instead of the other guy who is paying $10. A good PPC manager will understand all of your sub markets and observes them daily to get your ads displayed at the lowest possible price. PPC Managers also track and how much you are spending and compares it to the amount of new customers it brought in. This information can show or deny that the PPC campaign is giving a profit or not.
Here is a generic example of how to calculate whether PPC can help your business.
- You make $100 profit from making 1 sale.
- After 1 month your average Cost Per Click (CPC) ends up being $1.00
- Out of 70 clicks 1 user was "converted" into a customer.
- You brought in $100, spent $70, and made an extra $30.
